Women’s Veterans Retreat March 15, 2024

We conducted our 1st 2024 Women Veteran Retreat during March 15-17th at Wild Horse Ranch, Supply, NC. The retreat was another enormous success and all 12 participants left feeling calmer, collected, and connected as a result of attending.ย

Attendees were treated to all the activities scheduled on the agenda. However, as to be expected some activities were moved around to accommodate attendee interest, available horses, and weather conditions.

Even with schedule modifications, all veterans were able to attend all activities of their choice. Veteran feedback indicated that bushcraft with Dan Badger and herd observation in the pasture were the most liked but all were enjoyed.ย

ย Lunch was provided onsite for all retreat attendees, key staff, volunteers, equine advocates, and horse owners.ย

After ranch time each day, everyone moved to the beach house for personal time, rest, and dinner. The food was prepared and served by volunteers. Everyone was very pleased with both the food and the beach accommodation.

Saturday night we had a beach bonfire prepared for us by Black Sails Adventure company. They built the fire, supplied 15 chairs and blankets, and then closed the fire when we were done. Some of the best comments, deep personal feelings and connections were seen and heard at the bonfire.ย

Sunday morning began with a delicious breakfast by Dan Badger followed by a walk on the beach and group photos. Afterwards, everyone packed and departed for the ranch at approximately 9:00 AM. Upon arrival, we conducted more mounted and unmounted activities including trail rides and arena obstacle course.

Then after the activities, we took time to do a body scan and personal assessment (done periodically throughout the retreat). We closed out with exit survey completion, herd observations and closing ceremonies.

We stood in a horseshoe shape while our mental health professional, Joyce Nelson, addressed to group. the founder, Kathy Roth, addressed the group around the meaning of the horseshoe and โ€œgood luckโ€. Her remarks centered on the luck theme and the creation of opportunities for each one of them.ย

New activities added this retreat including Art Therapy (painting by number of actual horse partners for this retreat) and mounted trail rides with equine leads and side walkers. All activities were conducted in safety vests purchased last year.ย

All attendees and staff returned home safely as evidenced by texts received from each.ย
